Meet Wendy Urwin - Gut Health Specialist in Highland

Wendy Urwin

Wendy’s passion for nutrition & functional medicine stems from her personal experience of debilitating chronic fatigue, severe gut health problems, histamine intolerance and anxiety. Medically there was ‘nothing wrong’ but she was incapacitated. Nutrition and lifestyle medicine restored her health and saved her sanity.

Wendy's Story

Good health is not something Wendy ever takes for granted, 20 years ago she was stuck in a terrifying chronic health dead-end with medical tests declaring ‘nothing was wrong’ while she experienced constant pain and discomfort, debilitating physical and mental fatigue, and unstable moods. The fear of being incapable of caring for her daughter drove her to seek another solution: nutrition and lifestyle medicine enabled her to take back control of her body, mind and health.

The revelation that diet could have such a profound effect on health made Wendy wonder how many other people were stuck in a chronic health dead-end. Likely they too were unable to care for their children, watching their careers and relationships crumble, lacking the energy to get out and enjoy life, but with the right help could be empowered to turn their lives around.

Prior to her illness, Wendy was a Chartered Biologist with a senior role in environmental microbiology. She decided to redirect her enquiring, scientific mind to the study of nutrition with a view to helping others restore their health as she had done. She was surprised to discover an evolving field of research far more complex than any she’d studied before, extending beyond diet and nutrition into genetics, biochemistry, neuroscience and immunology. She studied full-time on a two-year postgraduate course to gain a scientifically-robust and professionally approved qualification, followed by Applied Clinical Practice in Functional Medicine (AFMCP2018) and NTEC certification in Nutrigenomics.

Wendy is a knowledgeable and experienced nutrition practitioner with many years of clinical experience who can connect and empathise with her clients. She believes that listening and understanding are the first steps in healing. Clients are attracted internationally and from across the UK for her experience in dealing with complex cases, and GP’s refer clients they are unable to treat medically.

Wendy lives in the beautiful Highlands of Scotland with her family, two rescue cats and a collie dog (who has yet to learn that you can’t herd cats), and devotes most of her spare time and energy to her beloved ponies.

Wendy is registered with British Association for Nutrition and Lifestyle Medicine (BANT) and the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC), the independent UK regulator for complementary therapies accountable to the UK Parliament. These organisations require demonstration of clinical competence and set standards for professional practice and continuing professional development.
